The Department of Horticulture invites applications for a full-time (1.0 FTE), 12-month, fixed-term Faculty Research Assistant position. Reappointment is at the discretion of the Department Head.

This position will lead the field research activities in weed management in perennial horticultural crops. The incumbent is responsible for design and implementation of research protocols, compiling research reports, outreach activities, and equipment maintenance. Other responsibilities include editing extension and research publications as needed, and supervising undergraduate and summer employees.

Position Duties

60% Research

  • Implement, evaluate, and maintain lab, greenhouse, and field trials.
  • Demonstrate.
  • Operate a motor vehicle to transport equipment and personnel to research sites.
  • Manage all maintenance of lab and greenhouse equipment.

20% Reporting

  • Analyze data, draw conclusions, write up results in research reports.
  • Prepare presentations of research for conferences.

15% Lead work

  • Provide supervision and direction for assigned staff, students, and temporary employees in field, includes planning, assigning, and reviewing work. Incumbent is responsible for recruitment, hiring, and firing of hourly workers, under the general supervision of the Project Leader.
  • Investigate and negotiate favorable terms for the purchase and maintenance of fixed assets.
  • Establish and maintain maintenance, repair, and routine cleaning records for lab vehicles and major equipment.
  • Create and oversee schedules for routine cleaning by student workers.
  • Provide a point of contact for administrative oversight for all lab members regarding hours worked, supply and equipment purchases, and travel reimbursement.
  • Create and maintain current chemical health plans, MSDS documents, and chemical inventories.
  • Make all lab members aware of chemical safety policies, training requirements, and monitor compliance.
  • Ensure a clean and safe work environment consistent with EHS policy for the storage and handling of chemicals and toxic waste.
  • Successfully complete and maintain appropriate farm, lab and greenhouse safety training and certifications.

5% Other Duties & Professional Development

  • Participate in professional development opportunities that enhance technical, educational and leadership skills at the departmental and CAS levels.
